Like people, our cats also need cu>

Prevention is the best tactic to help our cats to have a healthy mouth, for this we recommend focusing on three steps:

  • Adequate food
  • Frequent brushing
  • Regular veterinary reviews

Frequent brushing:

No dental dietary product is as effective as daily tooth brushing, none get or keep teeth as healthy as this practice.

We should start with tooth brushing, as soon as possible in the life of the animal since we will habituate the kitten to tooth brushing from a very young age.
The first thing you need is a suitable toothbrush. There are several options for this, there are special toothbrushes for cats, finger brushes and even special fabric thimbles can be used. The important thing is that the size allows you to handle it well and that it is not annoying to introduce it in the cat's mouth.

Next to the toothbrush, you also need a specific paste for cats, they usually have flavors of meat or malt so that the animal does not dislike it and can also swallow it without problem. If you have any questions, consult your veterinarian, he can recommend you among the different options.

The second thing you need is to arm yourself with patience, you should try to make the process as comfortable for him and this will take you days to get used to. It is important that you first adapt it to let you touch your teeth. To do this, start with a pampering session in a comfortable environment and then try to lift your lip so you can see your teeth and gums, just a few seconds and compensate with more caresses. Do this several times on different days so that your cat gets used. You can also try the toothpaste you have chosen from time to time, as a reward. This will be done to taste and you will not dislike it.

The next step is to pass your fingers, without paste or anything, through your teeth and gums. Do it as if you were brushing gently but only using your finger. That way you will get used to it and accept the next step more easily. Remember to always reward him with caresses and pampering, this will be crucial for the cat to accept the process. Little by little you can touch him more, opening his mouth a little more, etc. Always try to be as annoying as possible for the cat. And so you will arrive at the next phase, which is to do the same but with the brush you have chosen, some cats usually prefer gauze for the finger, however this depends on the option that best suits you.

While you put into practice all the above tips, it is recommended that you also try different positions to find the one that is most comfortable for you and your cat. It is advisable to talk to him during the process and caress him to create a friendly environment that makes him relaxed and helps to avoid rejection of the animal when brushing.

Finally, when you have become accustomed to the above, you can start brushing with the brush and some paste on it. Remember that brushing should be smooth and that you should always end up with a great reward for him for having let himself be done. The advisable way to brush your teeth is from top to bottom, from the gum to the outside. Once your cat has become accustomed to brushing it is advisable to do it about 4 times a week.
